Profile of a Crash

Fatigue is often a factor in a collision if the:

  • crash occurs late at night, early in the morning or in mid-afternoon
  • crash is serious
  • crash involves a single vehicle leaving the roadway
  • crash occurs on a high-speed road
  • driver does not attempt to avoid the crash
  • driver is alone in the vehicle

Fatigue is often a secondary or contributing factor in collisions (reduced capacity of avoidance/reaction/judgment/concentration and/or reflexes). The proportion of collisions attributed to fatigue increases with the degree of severity of the collision.
